01-WHO WE ARE
WE ARE NOT A GYM.
WE ARE A WAY OUT.
Feral State began with a woman who got tired of waiting for someone to do something.
Our founder wanted a place where women could train without being watched. That idea turned into kickboxing and Muay Thai training, which turned into a self-defense instructor certification, which turned into a nonprofit organization built by women who have lived these detrimental things we're fighting desperately to end.
The moment that made it urgent wasn't personal. It was a night outside a bar on Spring Street -- a stranger asking to borrow a phone to call the police, a woman's screams through a wall, the voice of the man attacking her threatening to kill her, and officers shrugging she didn't want to press charges, so there's nothing we can do. The attacker had two prior domestic violence charges and a kilo of meth upstairs that the officers were informed of. She had a dog and a bloody nose standing at the front door scared and feeling like there was no way out.
That's the gap Feral State exists to fill. Not instead of the system -- around it, under it, and in the spaces it leaves behind.
